The LonelyGirl15 story has been circulating the internet for a couple weeks now and if you haven't already heard the story the LA Times has published an updated article detailing the story. What's new is that three fans might have tracked down the people behind the YouTube videos.
Using the tracking software, the team was able to see that seconds before lonelygirl15 had sent the note, someone had looked at Seth's profile. This visit was the only one the profile had received in 17 hours, suggesting that whoever was at the controls of the lonelygirl15 account on MySpace looked at Seth's page before sending the message.
The user's IP address — the number assigned to any Internet-connected computer — was traced to the private server of CAA [Creative Artists Agency] in Beverly Hills.
With the LonelyGirl15 videos currently average over 200,000 views each, this viral marketing gimmick is proving very successful for the company behind it. The success is astonishing and the lesson to be learned is that you can get lots and lots of links to your site very, very fast with the right viral material.
